Ascension Fresh Market officially incorporates, sets fall schedule

The Ascension Fresh Market has been officially incorporated as a Louisiana non-profit corporation and has elected its first board of directors at a meeting on Aug. 20.

Tommy Kurtz was elected as Chairman of the Board, while Lily Murphy was elected Vice Chair and Christian Avery was elected Secretary/Treasurer.

Other board members elected include:

- Lisa Bacala, At-Large appointee

- Eddie Crawford, Lamar-Dixon appointee;

- Desiree Dorest, County Agent;

- Eddie Faust of Faust Farms, appointed farmer;

- Ramon Gomez, Ascension Parish Tourist Commission appointee;

- Charles Guidry, Ascension Parish President appointee;

- Robert Millet of Robert A. Millet Farm, appointed farmer)

- Sandy Saye of Say Saye Bakery, appointed vendor.

The River Region Art Association will be exhibiting local artists every third Saturday of the month at the market.

Other fall events include The Louisiana Dulcimer Association playing the second Saturday of the month at the market, pumpkin decorating demonstrations during the month of October, fresh baked goods every Saturday morning from GG's Goodies in Prairieville and free River Road Coffee for visitors. Lester Kenyon will also play guitar the first and fourth Saturday of each month.

Participating farms and vendors for Fall 2007 include:

- Boudreaux's Garden, Baton Rouge - mixed bouquets of zinnias, suns and other fillers and dahlias and mums;

- Ciampa Farms, Pontchatoula - strawberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, green onions, okra, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, pumpkins, fig cookies, homemade jams and jellies and jalapeños;

- Faust Farms, Amite - green bell peppers, cucumbers, squash, beans, egg plant (white, green, black), cabbage and green and red tomatoes;

- GG's Goodies, Prairieville - cake balls, pralines, cookies, muffins, and pecan pies;

- Gage and Evin Sprimp Company, Cut Off - fresh shrimp and fish, gumbo filé and shrimp boulettes;

- L'Hoste Citrus, Braithwaite - organic navels, Satsumas, meyer lemons, tangelos, red grapefruit, purple grapefruit, pankin manderines, sweet/sour kumquats, Louisiana Sweets and blood oranges;

- Newsham Nurseries, Pontchatoula - plants, fruits, jellies, onions and squash;

- Robert A Millet Farm, Paulina - satsumas, navels, Louisiana sweets, limes, lemons, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, lemon trees, lime trees and satsuma trees;

- Rockin' H Farms, St. Amant - quail eggs and pickled eggs;

- Say Saye-Bakery at the Market-Batchelor - bakery products, gourmet breads and oups

- Storyland Farms, Holden - green beans, onions, variety of squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, mustard greens, turnip greens broccoli, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, oranges, turnips, collard greens, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, satsumas, radish, jellies, jams, salsa, olive oil, zucchini bread, honey, pickles, green beans and pickled squash;

- Vicknair Family Farm, Ponchatoula - strawberries, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, lettuce (romaine, butter crunch, kale), broccoli, cabbage, turnip greens, mustard greens, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, purple and white eggplant, purple-hull crowder peas and bell peppers;

- Woods Nursery, Gonzales - Herbs, potted plants and vegetables.

The market was created by the Ascension Leadership Class of 2007 and is a partnership of the Ascension Chamber, Ascension Economic Development Corporation and the Ascension Tourist Commission.

EATEL has signed on again as a sponsor of the market and is assisting with marketing materials. Additional sponsors include St Elizabeth Hospital and Zapp's, which donated more than 84,000 plastic bags to the market.

The market takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in Barn 7 at the Lamar- Dixon Expo Center.
